June 4, 2010 News Releases
As a free service to the community, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Citrus County is working to educate citizens about the importance of disaster preparedness. Their goal is to educate 500 citizens over the course of four months with disaster preparedness and response training.

On Wednesday, June 30 at 1 p.m., Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center hosts “Save Lives. Be Prepared.” Vicky Iozzia, an RSVP volunteer who has received special training in disaster preparedness using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) course materials, leads the class. Attendees are taught the importance of having a survival kit and communications plan.

Disasters include natural and manmade hazards – everything from hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wild fires and extreme heat to hazardous materials incidents, chemical emergencies and radiation leaks.Knowing what to do before, during and after a disaster saves lives and vital resources.

To be properly prepared, you should know about local emergency plans, understand how to identify hazards that affect your local area and develop and maintain an emergency communications plan and disaster supplies kit. You’ll also want to know about evacuation routes, emergency public shelters, animals during a disaster and information specific to people with disabilities.

All participants receive the FEMA “Are You Ready?” guide to citizen preparedness along with other helpful handouts including hazard information; a disaster kit supplies list and evacuation maps. For registration and more information, please call Vicky Iozzia at 352.563.2651 or send an email to vickyi@embarqmail.com.
